The Thompson Welcome Center is a pull-off rest area for motorists, serving I-70 westbound travelers coming into Utah from Colorado. Restroom facilities, pay phones, vending machines, and free Wi-Fi are accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The large grounds surrounding the center have shaded picnic areas.
Inside the Welcome Center is a staffed visitor information area, open seven days a week. Hours of operation vary with the seasons, but it is generally open during daylight hours.
Tourism specialists are on hand to help you plan your trip, give directions, and offer suggestions for activities during your stay. They have information on seasonal events such as rodeos, festivals, and resort snow conditions. Brochures, guides, and maps describe attractions in all parts of Utah. Up-to-the-minute data is available on road closures, weather forecasts, and other traffic-related issues.
The Welcome Center is located in the small town of Thompson, a few miles north of the full-service city of Moab. This is world-famous redrock country, with two national parks (Arches and Canyonlands) and a state park (Dead Horse Point) within a short driving distance. Moab is a world-famous destination for mountain bikers, river rafters, and 4-wheel enthusiasts. Since 1949 the Moab area has been a popular location for Hollywood movies. Movies filmed in the area range from the old John Wayne classics to more recent hits such as Geronimo, City Slickers II, and Mission Impossible II.
