5th Anniversary Home Machine Quilting Association (HMQS) - 5th Anniversary Celebration at HMQS 2008, May 8 – 10th

As part of the 5th anniversary celebration of the Home Machine Quilting Show (HMQS), the world-famous “Supper” quilt will be on special exhibit, sponsored by Gammill® Quilting Systems. “The Supper,” a quilted reproduction of Leonardo daVinci’s famous painting entitled “The Last Supper,” has been displayed at churches and quilt shows across the nation and the world, even as far away as Spain. “The Supper,” with dimensions of 15.3 feet wide and 5.5 feet tall, vivid in color and exquisite in craftsmanship, has left its viewers in awe wherever it has been displayed.

HMQS features over 100 classes on a variety of quilting topics, a judged quilt competition with over $15,000 in cash awards and prizes, a Vendor’s Mall of 150 exhibitor booths, free demonstrations, grand prizes and a quilt display of over 250 quilts. New this year, the 2008 show will offer classes and demonstrations on machine embroidery, as well as machine quilting. In addition to the special display of “The Supper,” the 2008 show will include other special presentations and featured artists as part of the 5th anniversary celebration.

The HMQS 2008 show theme will be “Heirlooms – Wrapped Up in Our Quilted Past.” The Theme Quilt Challenge & Auction, sponsored by Quilting Treasures, will feature the new fall 2007 fabric collection, “Parisian Paisley,” by Marie Osmond. Machine-quilting guilds from all over the Rocky Mountain West will create quilts using the fabric collection for display at the show. The quilts will be judged, $1,000 in cash awards will be given out to the winners, and the quilts will then be silent auctioned off. One hundred percent of the auction proceeds will go to benefit the official show charity – the Children’s Miracle Network (CMN). All proceeds raised at HMQS will go directly to Primary Children’s Hospital (the CMN Hospital in Utah).

“The Supper” will be on display at the HMQS 2008 during show hours, which are 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Thursday, May 8th; 10 a.m. – 9 p.m. Friday, May 9th and 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Saturday, May 10th. The show is open to the public, and all are welcome to visit the “Supper” display. Cost to attend the event is $8 per day or $20 for a 3-day pass. Tuachan Concerts: David Cassidy - From television to recording and record breaking concert tours, from Broadway to Las Vegas production shows, television sitcom creation and producing, writing and directing both television and live theatrical productions, David Cassidy has made his mark and been lauded accordingly. Hailing from a theatrical family including mother Evelyn Ward, highly respected stage and television star Jack Cassidy, and Academy Award winning stepmother Shirley Jones, his fate as a performer was essentially seeded at a young age. It was by coincidence that he wound up starring with Shirley Jones in the astonishing success "The Partridge Family," which launched one of the most spectacular careers in the entertainment business.

In 1970, the year the show premiered, David skyrocketed to the top of the charts and the show became a phenomenon, as did its young star. He had the #1 selling single of the year, and garnered multiple Grammy nominations. Over the next five years, his official fan club grew to become the largest in history, exceeding those of Elvis Presley and the Beatles. And then came his introduction on Broadway, which opened a whole new world for him. He starred in the original production of "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" to rave reviews and successful box office response. In 1996, David opened at the MGM Grand in the $75 million extravaganza "EFX." Under David's creative direction the show was entirely re-vamped, and became the most successful production in Las Vegas

Governor’s Leadership in the Arts Awards Luncheon - Join the Utah Arts Council, Lt. Governor Gary Herbert, and Poet David Whyte for the 2008 Governor’s Leadership in the Arts Awards Luncheon. This year’s honorees are:

Arts Education Leadership Award - Ferron Holt, Educator, Washington County School District
Community Leadership Award - Gail Bunker, St. George City Council Member
Legislative Leadership Award - Greg Hughes, District 51 Representative, Utah House of Representatives
Lifetime Leadership Award - Ruth Draper, Former Director, Utah Arts Council

In addition to the awards, poet, author, and lecturer David Whyte will be speaking. Whyte is known internationally for his eloquent and inspiring talks drawn from poetry and prose that introduce an insightful and enlightened approach to daily living. He has given lectured in front of a wide array of audiences from multi-national corporations, to national government agencies, to non-profit organizations. His speech, titled “Crossing the Unknown Sea: Work as a Pilgrimage of Identity,” will touch on how work is of enormous consequence to human beings. Through it we provide for the self and family, but also, unknowingly, shape our society and our future as we do it. While it can be a joy or a burden, at best it is an intimate conversation between what you perceive to be your identity and who you really are. Through the insights of great poets and their poetry this should be a time to re-imagine and re-dedicate ourselves to a deeper understanding of our life’s work.

May. 9 - Jun. 18 - West Valley City
From the Masses to the Masses: Art of the Yan'an Cave Artists - The exhibit, privately owned by Combat Film’s Dodge Billingsley, includes the work of several artists known as the Cave Artists Group who worked under the direction of Beijing based artist Jin Zhilin. Jin was sent to Yan’an in the midst of the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976) where he recruited local artists to study art at the Yan’an Masses Art Studio that he directed.

The collection includes Jin’s early work from the 1950s, which was heavily influenced by Soviet Social Realism, work produced during the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976) that towards the end was illustrative of the Revolutionary Romanticism engulfing the arts in China, and works from the post-Cultural Revolution period (late 1970s-early 1980s), reflecting more traditional themes and aspects of local culture that Jin encouraged his students to study.

The collection is original and was acquired in numerous trips to China between 1999-2005. The art of the exhibit was not created to be sold, as there was no commercial value to art at that time. Instead, art was utilized for social and political purposes. In most cases the artists were not even sure what happened to their work once it was turned over to local authorities to be reviewed and exhibited in support of domestic and even international policy initiatives. As a result, nearly all of the pieces are the only known copies to exist.

Kendall Maffett - "The Kids in the Hall", the watershed comedy troupe of the 1990's, are returning to their live-performance roots for a major North American theater tour in 2008. The tour kicks off at the Star Plaza Theatre in Merrillville, IN on April 4, 2008, and will include approximately 30 cities in the US and Canada.

Discovered by Lorne Michaels, creator of "Saturday Night Live", "The Kids in the Hall" - Dave Foley, Bruce McCulloch, Kevin McDonald, Mark McKinney, and Scott Thompson - exploded into the American consciousness when their half-hour sketch comedy show debuted on cable's HBO in 1989.

The troupe’s distinctly edgy humor broke new ground with their characterizations of secretaries, prostitutes, gays, drug users, and oddball creations like the half human Chicken Lady, the vengeful "head crusher" and the chauvinist Cabbage Head. Critical acclaim, Emmy and Ace nominations, and a legion of extremely dedicated fans quickly followed the debut.

Herman S. Lavata’i, Executive Director of the Hawaiian Cultural Center states, “We are very proud to provide a voice to the Native Hawaiian community here in the Wasatch Valley, the State of Utah, and the mainland through each film presentation. This unique opportunity will foster a better understanding for our Native Hawaiians & Pacific Islanders, and non-natives who reside here, about our rich Hawaiian cultural heritage that have existed for over 5,000 years. This is our invitation to everyone “E Komo Mai Kakou” to please come and enjoy in the experience of Hawai’i’s stories, sharing of the Hawaiian language, culture, and history through Cinema.

May. 23 - Ivins
Tuacahn Concerts: The Beach Boys - You can capsulate most pop music acts by reciting how many hits they've had and how many millions of albums they've sold. But these conventional measurements fall short when you're assessing the impact of The Beach Boys. To be sure, this band has birthed a torrent of hit singles and sold albums by the tens of millions. But its greater significance lies in the fact that it changed the musical landscape so profoundly that every pop act since has been in its debt.

Even more than the Beatles, The Beach Boys found through their music the key to unfading youth-and they made copies for everyone. To these guys, the beach isn't just a place where the surf comes to play-it's where life is renewed and made whole again.

Few, if any, acts can match The Beach Boys' concert presence, spirit and performance. They were center-stage at Live Aid, multiple Farm Aids, the Statue of Liberty's 100th Anniversary Salute, the Super Bowl and the White House. On one day alone-July 4, 1985-they played to nearly 2 million fans at shows in Philadelphia and Washington, D. C.
