The Quest for Sustainability: Climate Change and Economic Growth

In a world of accelerating technological and social change, we face unprecedented complexity regarding the global economy and the environmental challenges it poses. To what extent do we really understand the science of climate change? Can we address climate change through modest lifestyle changes, or are the trade-offs between economic growth and greenhouse gas emissions simply too severe? Can technology save us? With over three decades of experience in the energy business as a government official, oil industry executive, teacher, and commentator on energy policy, Dr. Everett will interpret the relationship between climate change and economic growth.

Born and bred in the Boston area, and still a die-hard Red Sox fan, Dr. Everett graduated from Princeton University in 1969 and earned a PhD in International Relations from the Fletcher School at Tufts University in 1980.

The Vaikuntha Players have prepared a drama entitled “Lord Shiva Fights Arjuna." This is an oft-depicted episode from the great Indian epic, The Mahabharat (Story of Greater India).

Guests are invited, if possible, to bring some vegetarian preparation to augment the feast, or fruits or a flower. "Get A Clue: The $tocks Caper" at Megaplex 13 in Ogden - In the musical comedy murder mystery, stockholders in Atlas Inc. gather for the specially convened Atlas Inc. stockholders meeting, where the founder and CEO Simon Lively is expected to reveal the reasons behind the sudden session. Many outside experts are speculating that Lively plans to address the recent secret advances at Atlas Robotics. But there are rumblings of discontent among many stockholders, including former employees and family members as Simon, as usual, says – sit down!

Among those expected or unexpectedly to attend are Professor Prune, a former Atlas Robotics inventor extraordinaire who’s best friend is now Mr. Jack Daniel; Mrs. Peahen, Lively’s ex-wife who bares her claws at him but chirps sweet nothings to others; Col. Dijon, the world traveler and deep-sea treasure hunter who has spread himself thin financially but has always been able to get out of a jam; Mr. Mauve Green, the young master of Wall Street takeovers, is rumored to plan a “discreet appearance”; Rose Redd, who needs little introduction – her name says it all – she’s devilishly hot! Also, Miss Blanc, Simon’s French maid, will be in attendance to attend to Lively and his guests.

Enjoy getting right in the thick of the famous board game and movie “Clue” -- but with some "slight" twists and turns on the characters and mystery. Swan Lake-Moscow Festival Ballet -Coppelia is a full-length ballet in three acts and is an adaptation of "The Sandman," a story written by the German Romanticist, E.T.A. Hoffman, almost 200 years ago. The ballet, with music by Leo Delibes, first performed over 100 years ago in Paris, was choreographed by Arthur Saint-Leon, ballet master of the Paris Opera at the time. Over the years there have been many different productions of Coppelia all over the world.

To quote from one description, this humorous story takes place in the storybook village of Olympia in Southern Poland. It's about a clever young girl named Swanilda, her silly boyfriend (Franz), a beautiful mechanical doll (Coppelia), and a funny old toymaker (Dr. Coppelius), who dreams of making a doll who would come to life.

The Moscow Festival Ballet features leading dancers from across Russia and brings together the highest classical elements of the great Bolshoi and Kirov Ballet companies within the framework of Russian classical ballet. The University of Utah Department of Theatre Presents Richard O - Before it was one of the most popular cult films of all time, The Rocky Horror Picture Show was a stage musical. The University of Utah Department of Theatre is bringing that musical by Richard O’Brien, The Rocky Horror Show, to Utah audiences in February.

Clean-cut Brad Majors and Janet Weiss seek help from a seemingly harmless secluded house in the woods after their car breaks down late one night. They soon descend into a seductive, surreal adventure, driven by Dr. Frank N Furter and his obsession with a bizarre, Frankenstein-esque experiment. Part science fiction, part spoof, part exploration of sexual morés, and all rock ‘n roll this stage musical guarantees to thrill.

“Odd Nostalgia” New works by Fred Calleri - New works by Fred Calleri

Opening Reception on Friday, February 26th, 2010

Fred Calleri was born in Maryland and moved to the West in 2001. Fred has been interested in art throughout his life and was influenced at an early age by the Renaissance painters and the Masters of the early 20th century. Ironically, Fred took one painting class in college (the smell of turpentine made him ill) and only became seriously interested in professionally painting after the birth of his son in 1997. By studying artists such as Zorn, Sargent, Vermeer, Sorolla and many others as well as living masters today, Calleri aims to reproduce classic and romantic images using the master’s palette and mood to create an emotional reaction.

While exploring the figure and representational painting in general, Calleri found by adding a slight distortion he was free to let the image take him where it wanted to go. By distorting the image the bonds of reality and style become less commanding and the piece develops a whimsical style of its own. Calleri feels especially compelled to paint the most classical of artistic subjects, the human figure, but his body of work also includes landscapes and still life—whatever subjects manage to capture his interest as he continually searches the world around him for reasons to record an image with the brush.

Bye Bye Birdie presented at Heritage Theatre, 2505 So. Hwy 89 Perry, Utah
Directed by Colette R. Henderson ( actress1961@yahoo.com )
Performance Dates: Mondays, Friday’s and Saturdays, February 26 – March 20, 2010-7:30 pm.
2:00 Matinees March 6 and 13
Call for Reservations Mon., Wed. – Sat. 10 am to 1 pm (435) 723-8392

Similar to, but not exactly like the 1950’s movie, (this is better)! Elvis-type rock star and teen heartthrob, Conrad Birdie, is being inducted into the army. (Cue the screaming teenage girls in poodle skirts and hula-hoops!) Due to bad contracts, Conrad’s manager/songwriter, Albert Peterson, will then become bankrupt. Albert’s long-time secretary and girlfriend, Rosie Alvarez, comes up with a scheme to make Albert some money so he can get out of the music business and marry her. (He wants to be, “An English Teacher”, but his Super-controlling mamma, Mae Peterson, doesn’t want her ‘Sonny boy’ to leave their joint company “Al-Mae-Lou”, and, heaven forbid, marry Rosie.) Rosie tells Albert to write a song called, “One Last Kiss”. Conrad will sing it to a randomly selected teenage girl, Kim MacAfee, LIVE, on the Ed Sullivan Show, after which he will kiss Kim and then enter the Army. Rosie believes that the publicity will vault the song to #1 and make Albert rich. Cut to Sweet Apple, Ohio where Kim MacAfee, local president of the Conrad Birdie Fan Club, has just been pinned by Hugo Peabody, jealousy to ensue! The adults have several fun numbers: “Healthy Normal American Boy”, “Kids”, and “Hymn for a Sunday Evening”. The teens and young adults will sing and dance in the title cut
“Bye Bye Birdie”, “Telephone Hour”, “Got a Lot of Livin’” and more! This is the classic, family favorite! It is a funny, energetic & charismatic show that will have you tapping your toes, singing along, and smiling all the way home.

The cast includes : Conrad Birdie played by Tyson Price of North Ogden, Kim McAfee played by Emilee Cooke also of North Ogden, Rosie Alvarez played by Jessica Knowles of Ogden, Albert Peterson played by Doug Shepherd of Liberty and Hugo Peabody played by Jared Henderson of North Ogden.

If You Give a Mouse a Cookie - A stage adaption of the book by Laura Joffe Numeroff, this play is a surefire giggle-generator! Who would ever suspect that a tiny little mouse could wear out an energetic young boy? The Boy gets his irrepressible furry guest a cookie, and that starts a cascade of comical catastrophes…and when Mouse wants to clean up his own messes, he leaves behind an even bigger mess than when he started. It’s a joyful and witty roller coaster of side-splitting situations as Mouse’s chaos-causing antics just can’t be stopped – from figure skating on scrub brushes to wrestling boa constrictors. Adults and children alike won’t want the fun and follies to end! After a long day of mishaps and misadventures, Mouse is thirsty -- and as the exasperated Boy goes to get him some milk, we all wait for the line we know is coming – “Could I have a cookie?" Artist Series at the J - Come enjoy some of the city’s most intriguing and creative artists, being showcased at the I.J. and Jeanné Wagner Jewish Community Center. We will debut a different artist each month.

Helenka Bimstein:
I was living in Winnetka, a suburb of Chicago and I told my husband I wanted to become an interior designer. So he said I would have to get on his train early every morning to Chicago. So I said I would do that. It took 4 years to get my degree. One day a friend, Ann Grimmer, who was an artist invited me to a class in which her daughter was a model. I was the first one finished. Much to my surprise it was the best painting in the class. I have this painting in my home in S.L.C. today. So I decided to take night classes at Lake Forest College. One night the teacher announced he would give a critique next week. I was busily painting when he came around to me, leaning over my shoulder he shouted “Ah, a Cezanne”. I was so flattered and have been an artist ever since in both painting and sculpting.

The Jung Society of Utah:Transcending the Mind with Genpo Roshi - The mind is a wonderful thing, capable of brilliant thought and creativity, as well as bringing misery and suffering. How can we understand and work with it? How can we channel this great gift and resource to bring love and joy to our lives and relationships? In this brief introduction, Zen Master Genpo Roshi will work with us to explore and directly experience how our minds can become our greatest friend and ally.

Dennis Genpo Merzel Roshi is revolutionary in the tradition of the old Zen Masters who embodied Buddhist teachings. As Buddhism moved from India to China to Japan and other Asian cultures, it found unique expression within each culture. Genpo Roshi has been able to revitalize and transform it for the current day and age. He is working to transmit the essence of the Buddha’s teachings in a way that is readily accessible to Westerners and relevant to our everyday life.

Nunsense - "Nunsense" is the story of five nuns of the Little Sisters of Hoboken who are staging a variety show. Fifty-two residents of the convent were accidentally killed when their cook, Sister Julia, Child of God, served them tainted vichyssoise while some of the nuns were away playing bingo. Upon discovering the disaster, Mother Superior had a vision to start a greeting card company to raise funds for the burial. The cards were a success, but the purchase of an entertainment center for the convent left them short of the funds needed to bury the final four sisters. With the deceased nuns on ice in the deep freeze, they decide to stage a variety show in the Mount Saint Helen's School auditorium to raise the necessary amount. Participating in the project are Mother Superior Mary Regina, a former circus performer who can not resist the spotlight; her competitive but dignified rival, second-in-command Sister Mary Hubert; Sister Robert Anne, a streetwise nun from Brooklyn; Sister Mary Leo, a novice who is determined to be the world's first ballerina nun; and wacky, childlike Sister Mary Amnesia, who lost her memory when a crucifix fell on her head.

Gallery MAR Presents "Migration: Into the Wild"- New works by Lisa Lamoreaux and Amy Ringholz

Opening Reception on Friday, January 29th, 2010

"Follow your bliss" describes the artistic path of oil painter, Amy Ringholz. Moving from Ohio to the West 2002, she found work at an historic dude ranch to make her way, while she was building an identity in the art world. Blessed with a gift, the creative spark and a pure heart, Amy brings her journey of discovery to her art. Her unique process; drawing in ink then adding colors inspired by the west, brings her renditions of the animal kingdom to life. Ringholz was chosen as one of Southwest Art Magazine's "21 Under 31Emerging Artists" of 2006 and as one of Artist's Magazine's "25 Under 40" in 2007.

Lisa Lamoreaux was recently honored with a one-man show at Antioche University. She approaches her canvas with the end result in mind, only to discover that the relationship between the medium and brush results in more interesting and complex narratives and compositions than the subjective mind originally conceived. This process of "getting out of the way" holds deep meaning for her, as is staying present with the process and noticing the connections between her internal state, the environment, and the manifestation of this on the canvas. Systems Theory, a model found in physics, is Lamoreaux's primary source of inspiration, which demonstrates the interconnectedness of all things.

Artist Series at the J. - Come enjoy some of the city’s most intriguing and creative artists, being showcased at the I.J. and Jeanné Wagner Jewish Community Center. We will debut a different artist each month.

Garrett Smith of Hammers Inc. Photography is a meticulous visionary and an intense participant in the world around him. His devotion to his art is matched only by his devotion to discovery and adventure, and the two often harmoniously come together. His love for the mountains is apparent in his work. In his photos one can experience the grandeur of a lavender sky reflected in the Dead Sea, and feel the thrill of climbing a sheer granite face. He has traveled around the globe, peering through the obscuring haze of cultural diversity and conflict to find genuine beauty that exists beyond preconceptions. A native of Salt Lake City, Utah, Garrett has practiced photography from a young age, when, captivated by the life occurring around him, he "borrowed" his mother´s point and shoot camera. Now, he often wakes early, striding out into the dawn, camera in hand, to capture that ideal morning light. In all his endeavors, and especially his art, Garrett strives to excel. His driven and individualistic nature, leads him off the beaten path, to wanderings that foster creativity and insight.

Too Much Memory - Salt Lake Acting Company - By Keith Reddin and Meg Gibson, Directed by Meg Gibson

An adaptation of an adaptation of a translation of Antigone. A fast and furious modern tale about speaking out.

"Too Much Memory is an adaptation of Amtigone firmly set in the present. Playwright Keith Reddin and I used this classic play to ask, when a country is in crisis, what are the rights of the individual? Of the government? How are we silenced? How do we lead? How do we maintain democracy? We've just come out of a groundswell of political activism demanding change. We're finding out it isn't so simple, it takes speaking up over and over. I find that where ever and when ever audiences experience Too Much Memory, the play mirrors the nuance of our current landscape." ~ Playwright Meg Gibson

Tawni Shuler: Ecotone - We are pleased to present the works of new visiting faculty member, Tawni Shuler, in this exhibition that exposes her works of the past few years along with works completed while at UVU. A graduate with a Master of Fine Arts degree from Arizona State University, and a native of Wyoming, Shuler brings a concern for connection with earth-place in her works. Having been raised with the rigors and unique experiences of farm life in Wyoming, Shuler combines her sense of aesthetic responsiveness with the life and death, dirt and skin experiences of her upbringing. She chooses to call this exhibit Ecotone and offers this definition: Ecotone: the place where forest meets meadow, desert touches river. It’s the frontier where communities of humankind and wild animals touch each other. It’s that shaky space between who we are and who we appear to be, the gap between reality and mystery, the certain and the imagined. - Joanne Smith from What Wildness is This. Shuler's work ranges in size from small to enormous and will occupy two of the galleries in the museum. Her work carries a curious luminosity. While virtually non-objective, she nonetheless acknowledges Caravagio and Turner as sources of inspiration.

Kelly Larson: After Vermont - In the summer of 2009, Larsen received a part fellowship at the Vermont Studio Center. He spent thirty days in a large studio participating with other Studio Center fellows in figure explorations, and, as he says, “an explosion of conversation with other residents that included artists and writers of all genre.” The award of such a prestigious fellowship is a landmark in an artist's career.

The “paintings” of Larsen are long in development as layer after layer of paint juxtaposes thick pouring of paint along with the most ephemeral glazes, transparencies, and translucent passages. Some of the images may be considered non-objective. In others, he integrates contour drawings or partially modeled figures, as he deems necessary to achieve the desired state of being of the work. The paintings in this exhibition demonstrate the range of possibilities that Larsen seeks to integrate. Some of the works evolve around Sheile-like figures, and others remain pure material interactions. A UVU graduate, we are pleased to present the of one of our alumni well on his way to recognition in the professional arena.

Chinese Painting by Yaodong Hu - Yaodong Hu lives in Shanghai, where he is a painter with Shanghai Baodao, Changhua Art Gallery, and a senior painter at the National Painting and Calligraphy Academy. A book about his work, The Painting Art of Yaodong Hu was published in China in September 2007. Hu's award-winning work has been included in solo and group exhibitions, published in newspapers, and published in Shanghai Bookstore Publication's The Collections of Oriental Art Academy: Calligraphy and Paintings.

Hu writes, "I have been fond of calligraphy and painting since my childhood. However, I had no time to develop this talent due to the demands of my career. Not until I retired did I have more free time to pursue my interest in this area. I entered the Senior Citizens' College to study Chinese calligraphy and painting, specializing in flower, bird, animal, and landscape painting. Fifteen years of diligent practice, hard work, and development--from basic to proficient, from imitation to innovation, from entry-level to high-level--have brought me vitality, good health, friendship, and wisdom. The benefits of my painting work are immeasurable. Not only are my golden years filled with joy, I have, indeed, realized my dream of becoming a master of Chinese painting."

Toomey writes, "I've seen the world in brushstrokes and washes since I was twelve. Lately, the wide expanses and the light and color of Utah's west desert have captured my attention. From Fish Springs to the Bear River Bird Refuge, and from the eastern shore of the Great Salt Lake to Pilot Peak, the landscapes are foreboding, but their starkness holds a unique beauty: a sea of salt, sand and mud; plants struggling against the heat and salinity; mountains cast from fire; skies of infinite variety and width; water in unlikely places. I use transparent watercolors and I paint without preliminary sketching to allow for an intuitive representation. I primarily paint with one- and two-inch brushes to capture scenes with the fewest strokes. I use paper with panoramic dimensions to best match the west desert horizons."
