Westminster Presents Mistakes About Islam, Mistakes About the West - Westminster College presents a lecture by Anthony Appiah, Ph.D., on Mistakes about Islam, Mistakes About the West as part of the Tanner-McMurrin Lecture series on Feb. 9, 2012, at 7:30 p.m. in the Vieve Gore Concert Hall in the Emma Eccles Jones Conservatory.
Misconceptions abound in Western thinking about Islam and vice versa. During his presentation, Dr. Appiah will argue that the very idea of an organic West distorts the reality of the societies it aims to describe and that the development of Islam was deeply dependent upon traditions drawn from Europe.
Dr. Kwame Anthony Appiah was named one of the top 100 global thinkers by Foreign Policy. Born in London, raised in Ghana, he earned his doctorate in philosophy at Cambridge University and teaches at Princeton University. Widely published with topics ranging from racial identity and African and black cultural studies to political theory and philosophy of the mind, he has also written several novels.
The lecture is free and open to the public. A reception and book signing will follow the lecture. The event is co-sponsored by the Democracy in South Asia Forum. For more information, visit www.westminstercollege.edu/culturalevents.

Westminster Presents Derek Dujardinâ's The MENding Monologue - As part of the effort to combat sexual violence, the student campaign of V-Day at Westminster College will present Derek Dujardin's benefit production of The MENding Monologues on Feb. 10 and 11, 2012, at 7:30 pm in the Gore School of Business Auditorium. The first-time production will run the week following The Vagina Monologues on campus.
The MENding Monologues is an all male monologue production highlighting gender violence issues from male perspectives. Inspired by Eve Ensler's production of The Vagina Monologues, Dujardin, a fellow writer, speaker, and performer, wanted to include the voice of men in the fight against sexual violence. His timing was perfect. Ensler and the V-Day organization had been searching for a way to include men in their cause to end violence and Dujardin's monologues spoke with brilliance and meaning, humor and sadness, about the different ways that men are affected by violence against women. Through these new monologues, men and women alike are awed by the impact that violence has on everyone: the victims, families, loved ones, children and society as a whole.
General admission is $10. Tickets can be purchased at the Westminster Box Office the day of the performance or over the phone at (801) 832-2457. Proceeds from all V-Day at Westminster events, including The MENding Monologues, will benefit the Salt Lake City Rape Recovery Center, which provides counseling and educational services to victims of sexual violence and to the greater Salt Lake community.
For more information, contact Jillian Edmonds at joe0416@westminstercollege.edu. For more information about V-Day's global movement to end violence against women and girls, visit vday.org. Also, check out The MENding Monologues website at themending.org.

“The Paper Moon Dance” Fred Calleri, Solo Exhibition - Fred Calleri, Solo Exhibition—Opening Reception on Saturday, February 11th, 2012
A fan favorite, Calleri’s work is collected by families and celebrities both young and old, all across the nation. His figurative oil paintings, often navigating through the ‘20s and into the ‘60s, have a wonderfully nostalgic feel, harkening back to a simpler time. A new blending of the representational with the more whimsical and quirky distortion allows for an enriched narrative in Calleri’s work. Each piece becomes personal as it tells a story, unique for each viewer

Snow College Theater-'Once Upon A Mattress' - If you thought you knew the story of ‘The Princess and The Pea,’ you may be in for a walloping surprise! Did you know, for instance, that Princess Winnifred actually swam the moat to reach Prince Dauntless the Drab? Or that Lady Larken’s love for Sir Harry provided a rather compelling reason that she reach the bridal altar post haste? Or that, in fact, it wasn’t the pea at all that caused the princess a sleepless night? Carried on a wave of wonderful songs, by turns hilarious and raucous, romantic and melodic, this rollicking spin on the familiar classic of royal courtship and comeuppance provides for some side-splitting shenanigans. RDT at the Leonardo - Known for their commitment to the health of our communities and stewardship of the environment, Repertory Dance Theatre will present a series of activities on Feb 18 at the Leonardo Museum to raise awareness of the importance of clean air.
Movement Explorations: RDT invites the public to participate in short Movement Explorations that will focus the impacts of air pollution, how the environment affects your health and the importance of making wise choices to help decrease pollution. Performance: At 2:00 pm RDT dancers will perform in response to Amy Caron’s immense sculpture filling The Leonardo atrium. Holotype is a dynamic instillation inspired by algae that suggest an inner landscape or “inscape: that the dancers will use as a springboard for choreography as they perform around, between, inside and under the translucent organic forms.
The audience will gain a new perspective on the subject of “clean air” as they are invited to view the RDT dancers and the sculpture instillation from a variety of angles in the atrium gallery. Westminster and the Utah Council for Citizen Diplomacy Present â - Westminster College and the Utah Council for Citizen Diplomacy present a lecture by Frederick Kempe on “From Kennedy to Obama: How Presidential Decisions
Shape History and Foreign Policy on Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2012, at 7 p.m. in the Vieve Gore Concert Hall in the Emma Eccles Jones Conservatory.
In his national bestselling book Berlin 1961: Kennedy, Khrushchev and the Most Dangerous Place on Earth author Frederick Kempe calls Kennedy' s record during 1961 one of the worst inaugural year foreign policy performances of any modern presidency. He tracks Kennedy's actions through his inauguration in January, the Bay of Pigs debacle in April, the Vienna Summit in June, and the construction of the Berlin Wall in August to a showdown of tanks at Checkpoint Charlie in October. The result, he argues, was a brush with nuclear war in 1961 and again during the Cuban Missile Crisis a year later. Yet Kempe's book has powerful lessons for today, when another young and relatively inexperienced president wrestles with the enormous foreign policy challenges of the Arab Awakening and its aftermath.
Selected as one of the European Voices 50 most influential Europeans although he is American Kempe is an award-winning, 25-year veteran with the Wall Street Journal and currently serves as president and CEO of the Atlantic Council, one of Washington's premier think tanks.
The lecture is part of the 2011-2012 Weldon J. Taylor Executive Lecture Series, presented in partnership with the Utah Council for Citizen Diplomacy' s Ambassador John Price and Marcia Price World Affairs Lecture Series, American Express, and Wells Fargo All lectures are free and open to the public. Feb. 23 - Feb. 25 - Lehi
Night at the Museum - Come out to our annual Three - Night - Event…
Night at the Museum
Just like in the movies, “Our Exhibits All Come to Life! “
This phenomenon has gone on for so long that we can’t control it.
Our 5th year is bigger and better than ever.
As you round the corner you get a glimpse of 2 beautiful Music Box Ballerinas’ dancing just for you! In the next room the Pre-historic Cavemen and Women and the old Gold Miners have taken over the Rock and Mineral Room while two Scientist try to gain control.
The Dinosaur and Fossil rooms are overrun by ScubaDivers and Mountain Men. And that pesky T-Rex Dinosaur keeps playing with the customers.
While the Egyptians want you to learn how to write your name with the ancient writings of Hieroglyphs, those 1950’s teeny boppers will Wow you off your feet with music and dancing. Then it’s back to school for some kids. Teachers in the 1920’s and 30’s were a little different back then… Did you wash behind your ears before coming to school today?
As you head into the Native American Room be prepared for the stories of our ancient friends new and old. And if you are unlucky enough to be captured by any of the outlaws and put in jail… Well… there just might be a few ‘Get out of jail free cards” floating around the museum… Just ask around. The Sherriff says “If you do the crime, by gotta do the time !
Everyone is invited but there is no room for Strollers this year!
We will be closed between the hours of 3:00 pm & 5:00 pm for set up on Thurs., Fri., & Sat. only.

“Up Close and Far Away” Matt Flint, Solo Exhibition - Matt Flint, Solo Exhibition—Opening Reception on Friday, February 24th, 2012
Flint’s paintings are about the rhythmic cycles of the natural world. Ideas of memory, fragility, and interconnections traverse his work. Earthy colors, repeated patterns, and marks intermingle with hidden images of glyphs, plants, animals, and figures, to form layers of meaning. Rich textures, worked surfaces, and subtle light qualities come from intuitively working and reworking the surface. No preliminary sketches are made in Flint’s process; every thought is worked out directly on the piece, forming a road map of the creative process.

New Work by Deborah Hake Brinckerhoff & Jody Plant - Deborah Hake Brinckerhoff seeks to represent and communicate human character in her work. Painted solely with a palette knife her style is unmistakable. So richly colored and generously laid on are her surfaces they are a delight in themselves. Brinckerhoff says “My paintings are representational of the subject, but not necessarily accurate to real life. I hope to achieve balance by teasing out the connections between the uncertainties and conflicts in life as well as the exuberance and joy of what it means to be in this world.”
Jody Plant‘s focus lies in salvaging materials that many would consider throw away objects and transforming them into pieces of art. As Jody says, “my work is about unearthing the sublime in the ordinary. Through the manipulation of organic and found object, I explore the inevitable transformation of raw material. What interests me is how, over time, the work is altered by its exposure to the elements. I collaborate with time.” Jody’s librarian roots and love of books is evident in her frequent use of vintage textbooks, old letters and forgotten photographs. To these relics she adds found bird’s nests, tattered feathers, stones, rusted wire, broken glass, tree boughs and other such pieces from the “forgotten and natural worlds”. Through Jody’s eyes we are able to open our own to the poetry of assemblage.

The Adding Machine by Elmer Rice - Have you ever been passed over for a promotion, or gone years without a raise? Ever felt like murdering your boss? Then meet Mr. Zero, a neurotic, number crunching accountant who goes to work every day at a monotonous and wearisome job where he’s exploited. At home, his unsympathetic wife constantly nags him. When the company he’s faithfully worked at for the past twenty-five years informs him that, instead of giving him a promotion, they’ll be giving him the boot and replacing him with a machine, Mr. Zero goes berserk and kills his boss without remorse. Mr. Zero is convicted and hanged for his crime, but in the afterlife is presented with freedom of choice and opportunities unlike anything he’s experienced. Will he improve his existence, or will fear hold him back, stuck in a rut, doomed to repeat his decisions ad infinitum? Mr. Zero’s story will give you a new perspective on your job, your life, and what it means to be human. Directed by Jerry Rapier.

Hidden Voices: Women in Printmaking - The Hidden Voices program focuses on underrepresented populations and offers a safe outlet for expression through art projects, developing skills and building community in Utah County. As the second session of the Hidden Voices program, “Women in Printmaking” showcases work from women in our community, selected to share their life experiences and personal views through the printmaking medium. Some participants have overcome tremendous obstacles in their pasts and have used the program as a safe place for expression. The resulting art is a powerful example of issues facing women in today's society, and a celebration of women though art.
